Private eye Wray Larrick finds himself in a sinister world of beautiful, rich, powerful women when lured to the North Carolina coast by his former live-in girlfriend, local t.v.reporter Morgan Dalton, to help investigate the inexplicable murder of a world famous female athlete.

The "lovable smartass" Larrick, in his usual, unconventional way, approaches the case encountering a host of suspects, all viable, but quickly focuses attention on the one who has both the most to gain and to lose by the victim's death, and the one nobody is willing or prepared to accept as the killer.

In an investigation that begins at a beach on North Carolina's Crystal Coast, to the bayous of Louisiana, to Philadelphia, and back down South, Larrick builds his case leading straight to his suspect's door in a surprising conclusion that proves the old adage, "Things are not always the way they seem."
